Interests: Roman frontier and civil settlement in the Roman frontier zone

PhD thesis:

"Inter Moesos et Thraces. Roman and Early Byzantine Settlement on the Yantra and Osum River Basins, Two Right Tributaries of the Danube)", Department of History, University of Warsaw, 2007, under the supervision of Prof. Tadeusz Sarnowski

The main subject of the thesis was focused on the settlment in the rural hinterland of the legionary fortress and the Late Roman town of Novae in Lower Moesia between the 1st and the 6th century A.D. The area of study which covers 5.500 sq. km is placed in the central part of Bulgaria, on the Danube. This part of the Roman province had a transitional character where Hellenistic East met Celtic West, and the barbarian North faced Mediterranean South. This specific character of the central Balkan lands was expressed in the boundary stones set up inter Moesos et Thraces, i.e. between the Moesians and the Thracians. What is interesting, today, the line of the Yantra river divides two dialects of Bulgarian language.
The catalogue of settlements was the basis for reconstruction of settlement patterns and settlement structures, such as infrastructure, places of cult or cemeteries. Settlement structures and stray finds have been analysed in chronological division, and compared to administration, ethnic and social structures giving an interesting view on the important part of the Lower Danubian limes. An updated and expanded version of the thesis was published as a monograph in Oxford in 2016.
